Back At It -- Some More

Walk this AM to the end of Peter Johnson Rd. Diet has been "grinding" on me. We're in a rut and stressed by the seeming restrictions. We're not comfortable w/ accessing food "on the road" or even away from home.

Bg went up to 165 Thursday. This AM it was 113. We've been running above the target 125 for a week or so and need to "get with the program." Better food choices and more consistent exercise. This would be a rapprochement rebound from too rigid/extreme and an ultimate reaction to the rigidity.

Waterfront Walk -- 2.8 mi.

2.8 mi. w/ poles. Poles seem to pick up pace, elevate aerobic level. Probably about an hour. Colder, walking after dark (7 PM), w/ jacket, gloves, hat.

We need to get motivated to recover fitness, bike, weight work. Review the entries and have a look at the peak conditioning last summer when riding the bikes. Diabetes should be controlled w/ diet/exercise, weight loss.

Another Sunday --

Motel living, a week and a half now, is getting arduous, boring, frustrating. We managed in the dark about 45 min. walking along the waterfront. Let's call it 2.35 miles according to Google Earth. Blood sugar was down this PM 123 this AM and 105 this afternoon.

Weight is stable. Food routine is getting stressful. I'm not able to readily access a variety of foods.

Sunday --

We're walking into 3 Cups from Best Western, about 0.8 mile one way. It's COLD! Frost on the pavement. Weight was 219 this AM, 26%. Blood glucose was 100 at 5 AM.

Saturday night we got sick from Fred Meyer deli chicken ("honey glazed" Jeez!) and the cole slaw -- second, fourth, and six ingredients in the slaw are corn syrup and "dextrose." We returned it -- sick feeling, flushing, over-heated, gastro-distress.

We're getting the motel eating dialed in: turkey breast, lo-carb whole wheat tortilla, low-fat Jarsburg Swiss, onion, tomato, Dijon mustard, in the microwave. 1% milk from the motel breakfast cafeteria.

I can't imagine my house will be ready for a move-in on Monday.

Wednesday -- November 16, 2011

Water Heater failure -- spent the morning mopping up, then 2.14 Peter Johnson.

That evening was stiff/sore from the mopping up.

Thursday we moved into Best Western, we're walking up the stairs in the motel, walking to 3 Cups. Wt. this AM was about 216. But glucose counts are fluctuating -- as high as 158, irregular diet/schedule.

Not able to export Accu-Chek data to online sources.

Back At It --

Peter Johnson -- short route, 2.13 miles, about 35 min. w/ poles.

218 lbs, about 28% my blood glucose was running 128 yesterday, and then down to 93 in the evening after fasting. I'm wondering if I can load the charts and graphs from the software onto this blog?

Sunday --

Ended up watching a movie until about 2 AM, stuffing because I'm tired and bored. The regimentation in the diet is grinding on me a bit. I'm not quite dialed-in on intervals and portion sizes.

Yesterday I did end-to-end on Peter Johnson. Today I flaked out a bit and later did a walk from 3 Cups to the Post Office to mail a letter -- 35 min. Weight is edging up at 221, 28% and Blood Glucose (BG) teetering in the 100 t0 125 range, even after eating.

I could be doing worse. I binge on frozen strawberries (2 cups w/ non-fat yogurt), but at least it's not jelly beans and candy corn. I need to eat even when I don't feel hungry in order to keep things on an even keel. That's complicated by a lack of schedule, routine,

Catching Up

Monday we did Peter Johnson (end to end), 2.83 mi. 50 min. 217 lbs more or less.

Tuesday we did Peter Johnson (end to end), 2.83 mi. 50 min. 218 lbs more or less.

Wednesday -- Mt. Bike for 90 min. 8.8 miles, 217 lbs. Then I came home and fell asleep.

Sunday, October 30, 2011

More Peter Johnson

2.83 mi. about 50 min. One end to the other on Peter Johnson. Then protein smoothie (1/2 banana, 2 strawberry, 8 oz. skim milk, cup non fat Greek yogurt, heaping measure whey protein powder.) It's fairly sweet, but lots of protein -- I figure 3 exchanges, maybe 4. I'd have to look.

219 lbs. 27% -- the urine labs came back, no obvious problems, no keytones, no glucose.

I should be able to keep my blood glucose at 100 most of the time.

Last night I was hungry and tired -- looking to "snack." Cheese, strawberries, salad w/ tuna, another without, finally made a sandwich -- one slice whole grain, cheese, tomato, onion, Grey Poupon.

I need to pack more food along during the day.

Week One -- Again . . .

Progress, progress ! ! !

We were 217 lbs this AM, 28% Glucose last night ran 102, about barely two hours after 2 oz of cheddar cheese.

Peter Johnson Road walk this morning, from one end to the other: 2.83 mi. 50 min. We're feeling better!

Friday, October 28, 2011

Progress!

This AM we were 219 lbs 27%. Fasting glucose was 97 last night. Peter Johnson Road (2.14 mi. 40 min.) w/ poles yesterday.

"Half your diet should be [complex] carbohydrates." -- This is important because I was trying to eliminate them entirely. We're doing salads, fish/veggies, some cheeses (protein source), bean soup, strawberries & yogurt. MEASURING portions and cutting back on size to real, reasonable size servings.

Now we're going to do Peter Johnson Road again.

ICK --

I'm resistant to joining the "diabetes in-group groupies." I don't want to be a part of this trendy new wave of diet and exercise acolytes.

Walked Tuesday PM -- 2.14 mi. Peter Johnson

Wt. this AM is 224.6, 29%

Tested Tues PM: 97 -- after not eating two hrs.

Struggling to figure out what I can eat, how to manage carbs. I'm not liking this at all. It makes me want to retreat, introvert. I don't feel there are food choices available out in the world. It's all sugared junk. We're developing a case of "carb avoidance paranoia." I did, nonetheless, manage to eat some smaller, size/portion/calorie/carb appropriate meals. Meat demos at CostCo, salad, made some bean soup. We're eating fatty meats (Italian sausage until it's GONE), but getting on the fish and poultry regimen. Lean meats, veggies . . . sounds Asian . . . (Mediterranean).

We're working on it.

Fasting blood sugar, post walk: 100

Wed. AM -- Peter Johnson, w/ walking poles.

Day 3.

Fun and games -- the computer software for linking data from the meter is $99.00 "Free Shipping!" (Ohhhhhh boy!) I should see about having the VA spring for this. They probably would.

Test strips are about 50 cents each, or more. I tested last night just because I was curious to see if I'd come down from 123. It was 138. Target is < 120.

Walk this morning to the end of Peter Johnson -- 2.14 mi. about 35 min.

126.2 lbs 30% -- shit!

I can't figure out a diet for this stuff. I need to get a grip on daily carb count.

Saturday, October 22, 2011

New Day Two

224.6 lbs
27% fat

Optimal BMI would be about 165 / 170 lbs.

We're going to walk down to the end of Peter Johnson Rd. now (8:30 AM) -- light rain. Get this done before setting out on anything else. Taking the GPS for measuring distance/time.

Peter Johnson -- 2.14 miles. 38 min. 3.3 mph avg.

16 oz. glass of non-fat milk w/ meds for "breakfast." We need to regroup on what we eat:

Two Hours W/ The Doc --

For an old fart, I'm holding together as well as can be expected.

That said, Dr. Heisel gave me a blood sugar monitor and told me to "see if we can't control this diabetes of yours with diet, exercise, and weight loss. Yes, you're diabetic, on the road to medication if you don't do something about it."

So, we parked the truck down the street at Best Western Motel, and hiked in w/ back pack to 3 Cups. That's about 0.8 mi. one way.

Blood sugar was 126. We need to shoot for less than 120.

"You'll never get where you're going if you don't take the first step."
